Cyclamate
The short version
A high-intensity artificial sweetener — banned in the US since 1970 but permitted in the EU and much of the world.
It's permitted and generally considered safe, but there are a few reasons to be mindful — like sensitivities in some people, debated studies, or intake limits. The Safety section below explains the specifics.
Where it comes from
Discovered accidentally in 1937 by a graduate student who tasted contamination on a cigarette. Commercialized in the late 1950s, widely adopted in the 1960s, then banned in the US in 1970 based on a high-dose rat study linking the 10:1 cyclamate:saccharin blend to bladder tumors. Synthesized by sulfonation of cyclohexylamine.
How it's used
Sweetness about 30–50× sucrose. Used in diet soft drinks (especially European brands), tabletop sweetener tablets, and low-calorie desserts and dairy products. Often blended 10:1 with saccharin — each masks the other's aftertaste.
Safety profile
ADI of 0–7 mg/kg body weight. The original 1969 rat-tumor finding was not replicated in subsequent studies; current EFSA and JECFA positions support safety at the ADI. Roughly 30% of human populations metabolize cyclamate to cyclohexylamine via gut bacteria — relevance to chronic toxicity remains debated.
Physical & chemical properties
White crystalline powder, freely soluble in water. Heat-stable — survives baking and pasteurization, unlike aspartame. No significant aftertaste at lower concentrations.
Regulation worldwide
Permitted in the EU, Canada, much of Asia, and Latin America. Banned in the US since 1970 (and in Japan since 1969). Pending petition for FDA re-approval has been open since the 1980s.
