Calcium Aluminium Silicate
The short version
A natural aluminosilicate anti-caking agent — used in dry mixes and table salts.
It's permitted and generally considered safe, but there are a few reasons to be mindful — like sensitivities in some people, debated studies, or intake limits. The Safety section below explains the specifics.
Where it comes from
Derived from naturally occurring aluminosilicate minerals (anorthite-family) or manufactured by controlled fusion. The crystalline aluminosilicate structure traps moisture and prevents caking.
How it's used
Used in table salts (some markets), dry seasoning mixes, and non-dairy creamers as an anti-caking agent. Less common than calcium silicate (E552) and magnesium silicate (E553) — the aluminium contribution drives most reformulation pressure.
Safety profile
ADI of 0–1 mg/kg body weight (combined aluminium). Soluble aluminium fraction is the regulatory concern; the silicate matrix itself is essentially inert.

Off-white free-flowing fine powder. Insoluble in water. Strong moisture-absorbing capacity per unit weight.
Regulation worldwide
Permitted globally with maximum-use limits. Use declining in consumer products following aluminium re-evaluation.
