Where it comes from
A naturally occurring magnesium silicate mineral, mined extensively for industrial use. Food-grade talc is purified to remove the asbestos contamination historically associated with talc from certain deposits.
How it's used
Used to polish rice grains (giving the shiny appearance of some white rice), as a glidant in chewing gum base, and as an excipient in pharmaceutical tablet coatings. Largely phased out of US baby products following asbestos-contamination lawsuits.
Safety profile
ADI not specified — considered safe in purified food-grade form. Inhalation of unpurified talc is a documented respiratory hazard; the food-additive form's safety depends entirely on asbestos-free purification standards. Several lawsuits have resulted from cosmetic-talc contamination.
Physical & chemical properties
White to greenish powder, insoluble in water, chemically inert. Has a characteristic soapy or slippery feel — the basis for its glidant uses.
Regulation worldwide
Permitted globally with strict asbestos-free purity specifications. Reduced use in many product categories following consumer concern.
