Calcium Silicate
The short version
A calcium silicate anti-caking agent — common in dry mixes and powdered seasonings.

Where it comes from
Naturally occurs as the mineral wollastonite. Food-grade material is manufactured by reacting calcium oxide with silica or by precipitation from sodium silicate solutions. Used as a food additive since the mid-20th century.
How it's used
Added at 1–2% to powdered foods, spice mixes, salt, and baking powders to prevent caking and absorb moisture. Often combined with or substituted for silicon dioxide (E551).
Safety profile
ADI not specified — considered safe at typical use levels. Inert and not absorbed. Provides small amounts of dietary calcium, but the additive level is nutritionally negligible.
Physical & chemical properties
White amorphous powder, insoluble in water. High moisture-absorbing capacity — adsorbs many times its weight in water without becoming wet.

Permitted globally for anti-caking use. Standard ingredient in dry industrial food products.
