Potassium Aluminium Silicate
The short version
A potassium-based aluminosilicate — niche anti-caking agent, structural cousin of E554.
It's permitted and generally considered safe, but there are a few reasons to be mindful — like sensitivities in some people, debated studies, or intake limits. The Safety section below explains the specifics.
Where it comes from
Manufactured similarly to E554, substituting potassium silicate for sodium silicate. Less common in industry — the potassium form offers minimal functional advantage over the sodium form, with similar aluminium-load concerns.
How it's used
Niche use in non-EU salt anti-caking and powdered seasoning blends. Largely displaced by calcium silicate (E552) and magnesium silicate (E553) in consumer products following aluminium re-evaluations.
Safety profile
ADI of 0–1 mg/kg body weight (combined aluminium). Same considerations as E554.
Physical & chemical properties
White to off-white fine powder. Insoluble in water. Strong moisture-binding capacity.
Regulation worldwide
Permitted in some non-EU jurisdictions with maximum-use limits. EU permission is restricted.
