Why we flag it amber
A synthetic pink/red dye (Erythrosine). It contains iodine and high intakes have raised thyroid questions in animal studies, so its use is tightly restricted. That's why we flag it.
Safety profile
ADI 0.1 mg/kg body weight (JECFA). High doses affected the thyroid in animal studies (it is iodine-rich), so its uses are restricted. In January 2025 the US FDA moved to revoke its authorization for use in foods.
